Back in 2020, when the world shut down and we were all trying to figure out how to stay connected and creative, I started posting free “how to” videos for mandolin and fiddle. At the time, it felt like the right thing to do — people were stuck at home, looking for something to focus on, and music was a way to help folks feel a little less isolated.
But now it’s 2025, and I’ve had time to reflect.
The truth is, those videos didn’t serve the purpose I hoped they would. They didn’t create meaningful learning experiences, and they didn’t lead to real engagement. Most of the people who watched them never followed up, and many never finished what they started. That’s not how real learning works.
I’ve been teaching since 1985 — that’s over 40 years of helping students find their voice through the mandolin and violin. What actually works is consistency, personal guidance, and a real connection between teacher and student. That doesn’t come from passive video watching.
So I’ve decided to stop posting free instructional videos. If you want to learn to play — for real — sign up for lessons. I offer weekly one-hour sessions, either in person in Granby, MA or online. We’ll work together to build your skills, your confidence, and your repertoire.
