Every July in Northampton, Massachusetts, something special happens: the New England Morgan Horse Show rolls into town, bringing with it hundreds of beautifully groomed horses, proud trainers, families, and fans. For those of us who grew up in western Mass—or have spent years watching this tradition unfold at the Three County Fairgrounds—it’s more than just a horse show. It’s a living connection to our region’s history.
After reading a recent article by Carolyn Brown in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, I was inspired to write Morgan Valley, a bluegrass tune that celebrates the spirit of the Morgan horse and the place it calls home. Brown's story brought to life the history, pride, and people behind the show—especially the breed’s local roots and the legacy of the original stallion, Figure, born in West Springfield in the late 1700s.
The Morgan is more than just a breed; it’s a symbol of New England endurance, versatility, and heart. From battlefields to movie screens, and from family farms to fairgrounds, these horses have done it all. In writing Morgan Valley, I wanted to capture that deep connection between the Pioneer Valley and this remarkable horse.
Musically, the tune leans into traditional bluegrass textures—banjo, fiddle, upright bass, and harmony vocals. It’s upbeat, melodic, and grounded in the rhythms of home.

Thanks again to Carolyn Brown for the spark—and to everyone who helps keep these traditions alive.
